In the first publication in the Democracy Series, Professor Haleh Afshar of York University writes a timely essay that explores the relationship between democracy and Islam. In it, she tackles some of the key issues at stake in this debate. Drawing upon Islamic teachings as well as the experiences of many British Muslims she suggests that the notion of a distinct choice between being a good citizen and being a good Muslim is overstated, and that democracy and Islam are more compatible than many Muslims and non-Muslims believe.
This theme is picked up in different ways by our three commentators: Professor Brian Barry (London School of Economics), Madeleine Bunting (The Guardian) and Sir Iqbal Sacranie OBE (President of the Muslim Council for Britain).
The Democracy Series is supported by the Ministry of Justice.
