Foreign & Commonwealth Office Chevening Scholarships

 ***NB: The UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office has indefinitely suspended its Chevening scholarship awards programme. For the time being, therefore, researchers will either have to secure alternative funding sources or pay their own programme fee. Please check this website periodically for updates.***

 

 

Chevening Scholarships

The UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office awards Chevening scholarships for the spring and summer Hansard Research Scholars Programmes. Chevening scholarships are available in most countries but not the United States of America or EU countries.

 

The Chevening scholarship covers:

  • The Programme fees (including accommodation, tuition, LSE registration, London transport, political study visits & cultural programme)
  • International travel costs
  • Visa expenses
  • A stipend to cover living expenses whilst in London

We are accepting applications for the Spring 2011 Programme (8th January - 2nd April).

All applications for the Spring 2011 Programme must be post-marked no later than October 1st, 2010. Please email study@hansard.lse.ac.uk  for further details.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE (for Chevening applicants only)

Application guidelinesAll applicants must complete an application (see below) and attach the following pieces of documentation:

  • A short personal statement outlining reasons for applying
  • A CV/ resume(also required by email)
  • A sample of written academic work (2,000 words approx.)
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • University transcript

Applicants whose first language is not English (or whose previous degree was not taught in English) are required to provide evidence of proficiency in the English language.

The following qualifications are acceptable to the Hansard Society:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with normally a minimum score of 603 in the paper test, 250 in the computer-based test or 100 in the internet based test.
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with normally a minimum score of 6.5.
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English
  • Other qualifications may be considered.

IMPORTANT: A copy of your full application must also be sent to the Chevening Officer at your local British Embassy/ High Commission. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to interview at their local British Embassy/ High Commission.
