Join Our New Summer Programme!
The Hansard Scholars staff is delighted to announce important changes to its Summer Academic Internship Programme.
Effective Summer 2013, the Programme will be shortened from 11 weeks to eight. The Summer 2013 dates are: May 25 – July 20. Applications are now being accepted and the closing date is April 15. We operate a rolling admissions process and aim to let applicants know the status of their application within a week of submission.
The eight week Programme includes an unpaid internship at the heart of the British political establishment: with a Member of Parliament, a Member of the House of Lords (Peer), a departmental Select Committee, Government ministry, media organisation, law firm, public affairs or government relations consultancy, NGO, think tank or pressure group.
The other half of the Programme is comprised of an academic course that provides an overview of modern British politics and the parliamentary system with particular reference to current themes. The course seeks to provide a cultural and societal, as well as political, context for the experiential placement. The academic programme also includes a guest lecture series with experts from the world of politics, academia and the media addressing topical issues of the day. It will also include a four day study visit to the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh to explore at firsthand devolution and the thorny question of Scottish independence. Scholars will also be taken on a day trip to Oxford University for specialist lectures on elections and electoral history.
The Hansard Society is the UK’s leading research and education think tank. The Society provides a transcript upon successful completion of the Programme, but if participants want academic credit, they must arrange it themselves with their own home institution. The internship and course typically attract three or four credit hours each for a total of six or eight credit hours. The course is arranged in association with the world renowned London School of Economics (though is not to be confused with the LSE’s own Parliamentary internship scheme). Hansard Scholars are associate students at the LSE, which provides full access to the LSE library, IT facilities and other services and facilities.
Accommodation is in superior, fully furnished and equipped residences in Central London.
The cost of the eight week Summer Programme is £5,500. (GBP). This includes UK tuition and LSE registration, self-catering accommodation in Central London, orientation, political, social and cultural events including rail travel to and from, and accommodation in, Edinburgh, the Oxford day trip, and all administrative and support services. (The fee does not include tuition at home institution, airfare, local transportation costs, food or miscellaneous living expenses.)
The Hansard Programme staff provides participants with detailed guidance and assistance with the Tier 4 visa application process.
